Lucid, Nuro, and Uber Drive Forward with Production-Ready Robotaxi

Lucid Group, autonomous driving startup Nuro, and ride-hailing company Uber on Monday revealed a production-ready robotaxi, a major milestone in their partnership aimed at launching commercial autonomous ride services.

The announcement, made at the CES technology conference in Las Vegas, places the three companies among a growing field of robotaxi developers in the U.S., alongside players such as Alphabet’s Waymo and Tesla. The partners said real-world testing began in December, with Nuro overseeing on-road trials using engineering vehicles monitored by safety operators. A commercial rollout in the San Francisco Bay Area is targeted for later this year.

The testing program combines public-road driving, closed-track validation, and simulation to assess safety ahead of deployment. Manufacturing of the robotaxi is expected to start later this year at Lucid’s factory in Arizona, subject to final approvals.

For Uber, the project aligns with its strategy of partnering with autonomous vehicle developers rather than owning the technology itself. Lucid sees the initiative as a way to diversify beyond consumer EVs amid slowing demand and rising competition.

The robotaxi is built on Lucid’s Gravity electric SUV and uses Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous system, powered by Nvidia’s DRIVE AGX Thor platform.
